Inside The Ballantyne: Where Retirement Life Clicks and Connects
Just months after opening, life at The Ballantyne already feels like a friendly block party. New residents have quickly discovered countless ways to thrive, making the most of every stunning inch of Longhorn Village’s four-story, 136,000-square-foot expansion.
Neighbors gather in the clubhouse to cheer on their favorite team with cold Shiner Bocks. Laughter spills out onto the landscaped courtyard, where burgers are served up at the shared outdoor grill. Mornings start with yoga on the lawn or a loop on the walking trails. Afternoons bring wellness classes and lingering conversations. Evenings lean into music or trivia. When the air cools, there’s circling the fire pit to swap stories. Add to that exceptional dining, engaging social events and enriching lifelong learning, and you have a place where every day perfectly clicks into place.
Planning Early, Landing Right at Longhorn
Residents Pat and Cindy moved to their apartment in late May and have already found their groove. Their days flow between sunny walks, neighbor meetups and time on their go-to spot.
“We spend a lot of time on our balcony,” Pat said. “It’s nice and large, and we get a great breeze.” Cindy added, “It’s become one of our favorite places. We didn’t expect to enjoy it this much.”
The couple knew they wanted a senior community lifestyle long before they packed a box. Both watched their parents thrive in similar settings, so they started planning early and kept an eye on Austin options.
“Longhorn just felt more relaxed,” Cindy said. “People seemed a little friendlier. We liked it here from the start.” When they learned about the Ballantyne expansion, they moved quickly. “We signed up as soon as we heard,” she said.
Pat and Cindy had a plan in place well before they moved in. Their advice to others? Don’t make the mistake of waiting too long to move. Plan early, rightsize at your own pace and aim for a realistic timeline.
“We started clearing out six months to a year before,” Cindy said. “We gave things to our kids, donated and tossed what we didn’t need. I might have let go of a little too much, but it made the move easier.”
Walk, Dine, Unwind — All Connected
The Ballantyne’s hybrid homes are designed for light, comfort and easy movement. Many residences capture leafy views and cross-breezes. Spacious balconies extend living rooms into the open air. Thoughtful storage keeps everything in reach without clutter. “For us, storage has been a pleasant surprise,” Cindy said. “We’ve found we have plenty.”
Each morning, Cindy gets moving on the campus loop, often meeting new neighbors, or she heads to the gym as the sun rises. Pat walks and jogs the neighborhood paths and Steiner Ranch trails. “A group of us is organizing outdoor days, so that’s been fun,” he said. “My favorite amenity is easy trail access. Step outside and you’re on a path in minutes.”
Thanks to indoor connections between Ballantyne and Longhorn Village’s original building, it’s a short walk to lectures, fitness and dining. “We can go from our apartment to dinner in five minutes — and get some more steps in, too,” Pat said. “Plus, there’s a bar that’s fun for a drink. You can chat with neighbors, then head to dinner,” Cindy added.
Fresh Design, Warm Hill Country Feel
Retirement life feels effortless at Longhorn Village, where you can seamlessly move from the clubhouse to the clubroom to the courtyard. New programming is already sparking wine nights on the patio, small music gatherings and pop-up socials.
“I’m looking forward to what they do with the outdoor areas this fall,” Pat said. “I expect some great gatherings out there.”
Pat and Cindy love how the shared spaces invite connection without pressure. The landscaped courtyard softens the buildings and sets a beautiful backdrop for quick chats or long visits. “It’s very attractive,” Cindy said. “The stonework and plantings look lovely. I can’t wait to sit out there with friends when it cools off.”
